Mateus Ceramics: The Life Of The PartyBY MOLLY HAMANNWhile flipping through the Mateus Ceramics product guide, it’s easy to imagine why FACE Stockholm’s Gun Nowak and Mateus' Teresa Lundahl are friends. The products they create, cosmetics and ceramics respectively, clearly reveal a similar passion for color and texture. Inspired by the world around them, by nature, travel and fashion, their work is connected by their enthusiasm and love of life: reflected in every lipstick, shadow, blush, platter, saucer, cup and bowl is a desire to create functional, fun and beautiful products. ![]() At Mateus ceramics, founder and designer Teresa Lundahl, combines the Portuguese knowledge for ceramic craftsmanship with contemporary Swedish design in every unique piece she creates. “Anything and everything gives me inspiration.” Teresa says, which is evident in the variety of motif, shape and color utilized in her collections. Birds lend their majestic form to pitchers and tureens, butterflies hover on saucers and plates, oyster shells open into bowls and delicate lace patterns wrap around jugs and mugs in a brilliant array of color that seems to honor the Art Nouveau movement. Like Gun, Teresa also worked in fashion for many years; an industry that still acts as a muse for her today, Teresa reveals, “It was a beautiful Gucci dress that provided the color inspiration for the purple glaze.” ![]() While styles and trends influence Teresa in her current design role, she says Mateus ceramics is “all about feelings. Creating warmth and cheer in the home and around the laid table, using materials that stimulate the senses and communicate the feeling of authentic craftsmanship. Ceramics allow me to focus on the external appearance and design and still combine the quality of handmade.” Although Teresa has chosen a traditional medium, she hopes that by throwing pots, she can break the rules, “Think differently and go beyond the line is my design motto. Thinking traditionally: a design rule I love to break.” And with each new setting she creates, I think it’s fair to say she’s achieves this goal. With Mateus ceramics the plate has moved beyond functional earthenware without becoming pretty porcelain seen only through glass. The colors and patterns are part of the party, they join the celebration and the dish is enjoyed as much as the meal on it. ![]() Like the rows of lipstick shades that line the displays in every FACE Stockholm store offering numerous possibilities and color combinations, the stacks of richly colored and festively adorned plates, cups, bowls and saucers on the shelves at Mateus, present endless setting combinations. And for a good reason, Teresa encourages us to set the table with enthusiasm and serve up our own style: “Setting a beautiful table can set the tone of the evening. Just as you dress and put on makeup for a special occasion, follow your mood, and let your heart guide you in setting the table. If you feel extravagant, be extravagant, let more definitely be more. If you prefer simple let less be more, just follow your feelings when you dress your table, show your guests you care.” ![]() Teresa’s genuine passion for a well-dressed table that reflects personal style is the driving force behind Mateus: she is truly dedicated to giving us unlimited creative options. And there’s no question Mateus serves a full plate; with a mug for every mood, a platter for every passion, and a tureen for every temper, there is certainly a seat for every expression at the table of life. Now if only we can find a purple polish to match that Gucci-inspired glaze!
