More and more brides are saying yes to a wedding in the Hudson Valley.
For many of the same reasons that the owners of FACE Stockholm, Gun Nowak and Martina Arfwidson have made their homes here, couples love what Lisa Light of Destination Bride identifies as the authenticity of the area.
Picture perfect mountains, rolling hills, fields, farms, streams, rivers, historic mansions and unique venues such as the Basilica, The Pocketbook Factory, Omi International Art Center, PS 21, private properties and much more are what make the Hudson Valley so attractive.
It was at one of these hot spots, the Basilica, that the Hudson Wedding Showcase took place on April 28th 2013, featuring local vendors, purveyors, venue owners, entertainers and event planners. And, of course, FACE Stockholm was there to share in the big day!
While FACE Stockholm artists, lead by Helen Andersson, did mini-trials on brides-to-be, Rochelle Bostrom, the brand's Wedding Coordinator, discussed planning options, trial logistics, bookings, preparations and on-site services.
‘Brides always have a lot of considerations. They were all very excited to see FACE Stockholm at the event and kept me busy with questions throughout the day. But I have to say, once they sat down in the chair with Helen and experienced first hand, her ability, professionalism, and most of all her calm, understanding manner – they were sold! Helen makes my job pretty easy’ says Rochelle.
The FACE Stockholm team, including Rosalie Bell and Amy Haraldsen, also did the makeup for the Fashion Show at the event. Ten models showcased bridal gowns and bridesmaids dresses provided by Angela’s Bridal of Albany, NY. The makeup, created by Helen, was modern take on The Great Gatsby – a look that is beautiful in person and in photographs (two very important considerations!)
It was a full day, inspiring to see the bounty and the beauty of the region and to meet like-minded local businesses – other folks that realize the splendor of the Hudson Valley and want to share it. Seeing all that the area has to offer, it would be hard not to say “I do!”
As we grow increasingly aware of the origin of our food and confront issues surrounding food production and sustainability, Modern Farmer magazine steps in to help us dig deeper and explore local and globally significant topics like climate change, food security and roof top farming.
A wesbite and quarterly publication, its first print issue just hit stands April 15. It's the brainchild of the founder and editor, Ann Marie Gardner. A former editor at T: The New York Times Magazine and Monocle, she is also long-time friend to FACE Stockholm’s President, Martina Arfwidson, and you might say these two have been working the field together for some time!
It’s true, both literally and figuratively. Friends since 2000, they’ve actually turned the soil and pulled weeds in joint gardening efforts and Ann Marie even introduced Martina to the man she would eventually marry. So, when Ann Marie shared the idea for Modern Farmer with Martina her first thought was “Genius — just like Ann Marie! The concept is amazing and the timing is right-on.”
Informative and entertaining, Modern Farmer finds room for humor while covering serious subjects with a beautiful aesthetic that reveals not only knowledge and appreciation of the topics, but also a reverence for a way of life that celebrates and respects the world we live in. As Ann Marie notes, “Food issues are not just a nice-to-know thing, but they will become increasingly a need-to-know.”
With that in mind, we recently spoke with Ann Marie about how the magazine grew into the publication it is today.
FACE Stockholm: Can you share with us the roots of Modern Farmer, how you were inspired to pursue this particular topic? Ann Marie Gardner: I’ve lived in the Hudson Valley of New York for over a decade. In fact, FACE Stockholm, and Martina and Gun, have played an important role in why I’m here. My first trip to the Hudson Valley was when I was at W and we wrote a feature story about Gun and Martina and FACE Stockholm! I fell in love with the landscape here and then moved here myself a few months later!
Here, everyone talks about knowing your local farmer and where your food comes from— these are regular discussions you have with your friends and neighbors. And then I discovered in my travels as a journalist, from Argentina to Iceland, I started hearing these same discussions taking place no matter where I was in the world. You no longer have to be living a rural lifestyle to want to know as much as possible about the food on your plate. I realized during this time that this wasn’t just my next story; it was an actual cultural shift, and the inspiration behind Modern Farmer.
How has the original concept changed and/or remained the same since its inception?
I would say that the original concept has stayed the same but it has grown. Modern Farmer is interested in stories behind the food. We’re talking about how the food got to your plate. We are a food magazine in that we cover food, but we’re not a traditional “food” magazine in the culinary sense. What we have delivered in terms of the magazine and website is pretty much exactly what I envisioned and maybe better!
MARK HARTMAN/MODERN FARMER
Did you know what you would call the publication from the very beginning or did you play around with the title?
When I was developing the concept, I always referred to the project as Modern Farmer. It was a name that felt right to me to describe this cultural shift and it stuck!
Can you share a little with us on your concept of "rurbanista" design?
If anyone gets the concept of Rurbanism it’s Swedish design! It’s a clean, practical rustic look that is so pure that it feels modern even though there is a good element of patina to it. Does that make sense? I think it’s a clean, slightly urban, but also very practical aesthetic applied to rural living.
With all of this info at your fingertips — ripe for the picking so to speak — I would imagine you have your own garden or have incorporated elements of farming into your life: can you tell us a little about your personal growing style and the benefits and rewards you reap from it?
My personal growing style is a bit, well, let’s say very natural! So natural it may be on the wild side. I experiment a lot in my garden and one year I tried to pay homage to the Brazilian landscape genius Roberto Burle Marx, who planted in geometric patterns. It didn’t work out so well! This year, I’m planning to have a wild grass explosion in the garden! Let’s see how that goes.
Thus far, what has been the most striking fact or idea you’ve discovered in researching material for the magazine?
I had no idea that we need to be so worried about wild pigs! You have to read the pig story— it’s fascinating. (Read"Who Can Stop These Adorable Pigs?" at modernfarmer.com)
What do you hope readers will take away from Modern Farmer?
A greater knowledge of agriculture and the sense of self-confidence that comes from understanding the people and stories behind the food that we eat.
And of course, some DIY sensibilities too. It’s an awesome niche: food, science, eating, making. All those things come together in agriculture, but it's only now that people have found them individually sexy and interesting, and to have that as a playground is seriously fun for us.
What can we expect from Modern Farmer in the issues to come?
Stay tuned but you can look forward to more goats, more animals, more news and beautiful photography. We’re looking into farm crime around the world, too. The stories in Issue 2 will be even better and you can subscribe at modernfarmer.com!
ATISHA PAULSON
So just as we anticipate the season of bounty here in the Northeast, we will now also eagerly await a fresh crop of stories from Modern Farmer. And it seems the timing couldn’t be better-with spring in the air we’re all turning outward, literally to our yards and gardens, whether they be rolling acres or rooftop planters-Modern Farmer gives us food for thought as we head into the great outdoors.
Ann Marie Gardner, Editor-In-Chief and CEO of Modern Farmer Magazine (read our story here), is no stranger to the beauty business. Before branching off into international affairs as one of the founding editors at Monocle, she was an editor at W Magazine and The New York Times T Style Magazine.
Here the editrix shares her FACE Stockholm favorites:

FACE Stockholm joins Scandic Hotels' green initiatives
We’re not referring to a new spring color trend for tresses; we’re talking about Scandic’s most recent efforts to reduce the environmental impact of travelers, while providing guests with a superior experience. Since 1993 the Nordic regions greenest hotel chain has taken steps to eliminate unnecessary disposable packaging and reduce energy consumption in the 160 hotels they operate.
FACE Stockholm is proud to join this endeavor with the launch of a new amenities line that is now found in the 30,000 plus rooms of Scandic’s hotels. The new high quality products and packaging will not only be a well received beauty bonus for guests, but they help in reducing plastic consumption in hotels by as much as 21 tons annually. Now that’s a beautiful thing!
“When guests leave their own toiletries at home because they know that Scandic offers quality products in the hotel room, then we have come a long way.” Says Margareta Thorngren Communications Director at Scandic. “We are pleased and proud to have partnered with Gun and FACE Stockholm. Our new hair and skin care line is clear proof that environmental responsibility goes hand in hand with providing a positive experience for our guests.”
The all organic line includes Vitalizing Soap, Softening Body Wash, Nourishing Hair Wash, Caring Conditioner and Moisturizing Body Lotion, formulated and packaged in a tradition of simplicity for which the FACE Stockholm brand has long been known.
“Working with Scandic is of great importance to us.” Says FACE Stockholm’s founder, Gun Nowak. “Being able to reach out to Scandic's guests with eco-friendly products from FACE Stockholm means a lot to us and we hope that the pure simplicity of the new products will enhance the guests' experience.”
Every day, Scandics 6,600 employees work with a single goal in mind: going above and beyond for every guest to ensure the most pleasant, relaxing and comfortable stay, while always considering issues of sustainability.
“It makes a difference, something we believe our guests want to be involved in and contribute to.” Says Inger Mattsson, Sustainability Manager at Scandic.
And we believe that knowing this lets everyone get a better night’s sleep.

From the pages of Vogue and Cosmopolitan to campaigns for Revlon, Guess and Victoria's Secret to television screens across the US and Europe to speaking engagements at Harvard Business School, Frederique Van Der Wal truly seizes every day.
Like many women, Frederique juggles many roles. Entrepreneur, television star, producer, model, mother and friend...What super title doesn't fit this supermodel?
For someone who's as dynamic and active as Frederique, a simple and effective beauty regimen is key.
So, a few years ago, FACE Stockholm's Helen Andersson introduced Frederique to Icelandic Solution — our supercharged Marine Enzyme serum — she immediately became a devoted user.
"Having been in the fashion and beauty industry for so many years, I have come across many, many products," she says. "I have known and used FACE Stockholm products for many years, but when a make up artist recommended IS (Icelandic Solution), I was hooked."
WIth its marine Penzyme (penetrating enzyme) formula from the cold, clear waters off Iceland, IS is extremely effective in regenerating healthy skin cells and repairing environmental damage and other conditions. "I love how it feels and most of all it makes my skin look fresh and moisturized," says Frederique. "It's truly a great find!"
Try it today — we think you'll agree.

There is an old, precious beauty at our flagship store at Biblioteksgatan 1 in Stockholm. The interior.
It is 130 years old and more beautiful than ever. It was originally designed in 1882 for the most exclusive gentlemen's hat store in Stockholm, called A F Bodeckers hattbutik.
The founder, Bodecker, originally from Småland in Sweden, opened his first hat boutique in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. He then expanded to include stores in St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo. The quality and splendor of their products were unmatched, and before long they were serving the royal families throughout the region.
The interior was designed by the famous Danish architect H.V. Brinkopff, who created many of the interior designs that defined the style of the era during the late 19th century. His drawings for the the Stockholm store were sent to Italy, where the interior was constructed and then shipped back to Stockholm.
Bodeckers was located in the center of Stockholm until the 1970's when the store finally closed. The interior was chopped up and removed, ending up at auction in 1991.
Gun Nowak couldn't wait to buy it, even though parts of it were severely damaged. The Corinthian capitals, made of terracotta, had seen better days, as had the gilded plaster. Gun made sure that the pieces were carefully put together by a conservator, keeping the history of the place alive.
"I refused to do as everybody else suggested and repaint it to make it look new. There's no reason not to preserve history. The beauty of the original mirror, the fine nuances of fading colors on the woodwork is stunning. It has given me a lot of inspiration for new products."
The cabinets, mirrors and window framing were carefully fitted into the new store, with its high ceilings and arched window.
It was a perfect match. It looks as though they had never been moved, and serve perfectly as a keeper for FACE Stockholm makeup and skincare.
And it works like magic. People come into the store just to gaze at the Renaissance-style interior with its late 19th-century blonde tones still intact.
Even though it's quite muscular and over-the-top, it seems to have a serene effect on people. When they walk in from a stressful day and the store is buzzing, they tend to stay and play around, trying out makeup in this castle-like shop.
"Could I sell it? Never! Just imagine all the people who have admired themselves in those mirrors — both now and before. It's a time box of pure magic," Gun says.
Bella Wallis is FACE Stockholm President Martina Arfwidson’s little sister. But she’s recently earned another title all her own: she is the top selling artist at FACE Stockholm in Sweden.
On her latest trip to the USA for some well-deserved family time, we sat down with Bella to talk about...well, what else but makeup and FACE Stockholm?
FACE Stockholm: What are your top FACE Stockholm product picks? Bella Wallis: There are so many! For foundation I like Mineral Powder Foundation, you can layer for light or full coverage, day or night makeup, and it’s easy to toss in your bag. It’s great paired with the Tinted Mineral Moisturizer, especially in the winter: it provides color and moisture and works well layered under the powder.
Does the weather in Stockholm affect the type of makeup you wear?
Yes, right now it’s so dry, everyone needs moisture, that’s why the Tinted Mineral Moisturizer and Liquid Foundations are so good — they have some emollient to keep skin from drying.
In Sweden it’s also the light that is different: it’s darker, not like summer when your skin already has some color and you can just add a little lipstick or gloss. In the winter you usually wear more makeup to get that color.
I think every woman needs to have a good bronzer — it makes it so easy to look fresh and awake —Bronzer #1 works for everyone!
Sometimes I see bronzer gone bad, how does that happen?
Bronzer is not a foundation, so it shouldn’t be applied like one! Just a little on the forehead, nose, and cheeks; use it lightly. And pair with a blush so your face isn’t all one color, you need contrast. Körsbar Blush is a great color; it works for almost everyone and gives a nice fresh, flushed look.
What’s the biggest misconception that people have about makeup?
I think it’s that darker foundation is better, people want to look tan, but it’s just not right!
You can look so fresh if you just get rid of dark under-eye circles. Magic Wand is perfect for this, you can even use a little on your whole face if you don’t have time for foundation. Add a Bronzer and little Blush, like Blossom, Sun-Kissed or Harmony and you’re good to go. It’s quick and easy and everyone can do it!
What trends are you seeing for spring?
When spring finally arrives people always want more color, brighter nails and lips.
But if a color is really trendy, you need to be comfortable wearing it. If you’re not comfortable, then you shoudn't. Use the trend as inspiration, find a shade in the trend palette that works for you: maybe it's just a lighter version of that color.
Classics always work — red lips for example — update that for the season, lighter reds for spring, like Ullas Röda or Röd Veil Lipstick. Then choose a Blush like Tonight or Worship, they work well with the warm weather reds.
Is there one product people are requesting a lot right now? Precision Eyeliner, it’s so easy to use and lasts the whole day.
And of course Tinted Mineral Moisturizer, it’s great for moisture and color now and it has SPF, so it’s great year round.
If you were stranded on deserted island and could only bring one product with you what would it be?
Hmm, I would say Lash Booster, that’s my favorite. Beautiful lashes are always important!
What is it like to work for FACE Stockholm in Sweden?
It’s really, really good! We have a great team right now, and we have fun together.
I work on a very busy street. We have a lot of appointments, so I’m always meeting new people. And then there’s the work outside the shop; on set for commercials or movies and we do weddings, so there’s always something different that keeps it interesting.
And of course working with colors, being creative, making women beautiful; to be a part of that is amazing. When customers come back and say they’re happy, they just want to tell you, you made their day — that’s such a great feeling!
FACE Stockholm makeup artists help bring the glamour at Ivana Helsinki and Heather Lawton
BY MIRANDA RESTIANO AND MOLLY HAMANN
In New York, the FACE Stockholm Team joined Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Studio 450 on February 7th 2013 for two shows.
HEATHER LAWTON
The first was for Canadian born, New York fashion designer Heather Lawton. Lawton debuted her Fall/Winter 2013 collection, inspired by her own equestrian pursuits and fairy tales, such as Snow White. Sophisticated, yet edgy, Lawton chose a palette of black, white, dark blues and hot pink. Using a mix of materials and accents — silk, lace, wool fur, leather, studs, exposed zippers and even stingray — her dresses, knits, separates and outwear told a story of their own staged in an ominous winter wonderland.
FACE Stockholm’s team of top NYC artists transformed the models for Lawton’s wintry showcase, with a look dominated by intense smoky eyes.
To achieve the smoky eye, we used warm brown Matte Shadows in Ebony, Russian Caviar and Ash. Art Eye Pencil in Black and Brown was our go-to for smudging around the lash line, both top and bottom. To achieve a brighter more open eye look, we used Correct Eye Pencil in the water line. To complete the smoky eye, we filled in brows using Brow ShadowsMyrrah, Kanel and Suede to correspond with each models own coloring.
When hair and makeup was complete for the models, it was time to give the designer herself a touch-up. Heather's lids were smudged with Black Pencil and shaded with Pearl Shadows #36 and #43, as well as Eggplant Cake Eyeliner, used as a shadow in the crease.
Next, Finnish fashion brand Ivana Helsinki hit the runway. Designer Paola Suhonen’s "Rotterdam" collection for Fall/Winter 2013 took inspiration from pinup girls of the 1960’s combining lace, velvet, and chiffons in a colorful array of geometric patterns, retro florals and nautical stripes.
FACE Stockholm artists worked backstage to complete the bold and playful look, contrasting bright lips with fresh delicate skin.

With his first solo exhibition “Special Moment” in NYC at Munch Gallery, Spanish born visual artist Bubi Canal reveals a playful, enchanted world. With his obvious affection for color and its use in the process of self-expression, transformation, and discovery, he seemed an obvious choice for a Valentines Day collaboration with FACE Stockholm. The result is our very own special moment — a heart-stopping video collage that literally beats — we must say; he’s captured our heart!
A Conversation with Bubi
FACE Stockholm: You’re originally from Spain, what brought you to NYC?
Bubi Canal: I’ve always wanted to live in NYC. I like American culture and many of the people that have influenced me live here. In 2010 I met my boyfriend in Spain and he is from New York. In the beginning we traveled between Madrid and New York and then in 2011 I moved to New York. It was a big decision to leave my country, family and friends, but I feel very happy and at home here.
Has the change of place informed your art in any way?
Definitely. I’ve lived in different cities in Spain; Santander, Bilbao and Madrid and everywhere I’ve gone it’s changed my art. Just walking the streets in New York is very inspiring. I’m learning a lot living here and doing a lot of interesting collaborations with other creative people. I love this city, especially the people; everyone is so nice.
Are any aspects of your work particularly inspired by Spanish tradition or culture?
Yes, I think my work draws on many aspects by Spanish culture, especially the work of other Spanish artist that have influenced me, and in particular those from the Basque Country where I studied Fine Arts. American artists have also been a big influence and I grew up watching a lot of American TV, I was obsessed with MTV!
Where do the fantastical creatures come from?
I like to create other realities and invent characters. In Spain, Japanese TV shows like Saint Seia, Power Rangers, Marco and Heidi are very popular. I admire people like Jim Henson, Michael Jackson and Walt Disney; they created their own universe and made millions of people around the world happy.
There is a theatrical component to your work –have you worked in theater?
I’ve never worked in theater, but I would love to do it someday. I’m very open to trying other disciplines; I think it is very enriching.
You work in a variety of media and methods, including photography, sculpture, and video –do you have a first love?
Yes, photography is my first love, for me it’s always fun to take photos. My first photo studio was my bedroom at my parent’s house. When I studied, I specialized in sculpture and audiovisual, that’s why I like to mix a lot of media.
There is a playful, constructive component to your work that might make some nostalgic for the building blocks or Legos of their youth-do you draw on any particular activities from your own childhood?
I think there are a lot of references to my childhood in my work. I’m very interested in the toys from the 80´s. Sometimes I use toys as materials for my projects. I’m always looking for plastic pieces to work with, I like to recycle plastic for the color and because is cheap and easy to find.
Can you speak to your relation with color-particularly the use of primary colors in the current exhibition?
I like primary colors in general, for materials and clothes, it’s part of me and I like the clean, strong effect they give to the images. The colors that I use in my artwork are the same that I use in my life.
What are you working on now?
Rightnow I’m focusing on my first solo show in New York at Munch Gallery. The show is called “Special Moment” and features my latest work; it’s about love, magic and hope. It is a dream come true to share my work in NYC.

Swedish singer and songwriter Sibel is the model for our look for Spring 2013
There’s something about spring that makes you want to sing!
Maybe it’s the warm air, the site of the first daffodil, the greening of the world all around or an irresistible urge to follow the birds lead-whatever it may be there is certainly music in the air.
So it seems only fitting that our model for Spring 2013 is Swedish singer and songwriter Sibel. From ballads to club, her musical portfolio is a metaphor for the transformation of the spring season; the colors vibrate with the beat and the exuberant energy captured in the look personifies the exclamation of reaching the highest note.
Sibel embodies the determination, vibrance and enthusiasm of the season, the voice that resonates within us all when we hear the song of spring.

From the moment we met Hanni Beronius it was clear why at 22 she already has three titles under her belt: Miss Gothenburg, Miss Universe Sweden 2012 and Miss Congeniality.
Indeed there’s no denying this native of Gothenburg has a beautiful face, but what is immediately striking is her enthusiasm and confidence, she is down to earth, open, honest, thoughtful and incredibly engaging and endearing. As Hanni toured the USA in preparation for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas on December 19th, she teamed up with FACE Stockholm for makeup and we had a chance to discover a genuine beauty.
After speaking with Hanni, we feel confident no matter what happens in Vegas, she will leave a winner!
FACE Stockholm: What was life like before winning pageant titles?
Hanni: I was just like any other girl! I had my blog, my boyfriend, my job and my dreams — I work in marketing and cosmetic buying for "Raglady by Tara" in Gothenburg and I am hoping to attend medical school next spring.
How did it all start? How did you decide to get involved in the first pageant?
I was encouraged by my boss to enter, I had no idea what to expect! It has been such a rewarding experience, I have met so many people, including everyone at FACE Stockholm, and I have had experiences that most girls only dream of.
And what drives you to continue to pursuit new titles?
My immediate goal now is to become Sweden's fourth Miss Universe and make my parents, sponsors and country proud!
What surprised you most about the process?
That there is no "right" or "wrong" answer or image in the MissUniverse organization. They want you to be you, confidently beautiful, they don't want you to fit a certain mold. My personal style is very edgy and I didn't think it would be accepted, but when I met with Lu Sierra in New York and my personal image consultant, John Paul Hamilton, they both told me: YOU is the "look" that they want, confident in your own skin!
How has life changed since winning Miss Gothenburg, Miss Sweden and Miss Congeniality — what are both the positive consequences and the challenges of bearing these titles?
Well, I have taken off two months of my life to prepare, travelling the USA, New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, etc before the final stop in Las Vegas. I had the opportunity to meet and stay with the family that my father spent time with as a foreign exchange student in the 1970s! I’ve also met so many wonderful people from all over the world and have learned a lot about Americans and other cultures.
What led to the decision to pursue the Miss Universe title?
It just seemed like the right decision. I want to be an advocate for young girls, a motivational speaker and eventually begin a foundation for individuals who cannot afford reconstructive surgery: which is why I want to pursue a medical degree. If I win, my year in service as Miss Universe will provide valuable connections I can utilize in this work.
What are some of the highlights or most memorable moments from the traveland charity work you've done leading up to the Miss Universe Contest?
I have worked with the New York Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children as well as Lolly's Locks, which is a non-profit organization that provides high quality wigs to cancer patients who have lost their hair.
It has all been such a memorable whirlwind experience, but I have to say that when I got sick with a stomach bug my first few days in New York, it was quite memorable! I actually had my photoshoot with Fadil Berisha (the official Miss Universe photographer) and walking lessons with Lu Sierra (the official Miss Universe walking coach) while I had a high fever and was rushing to the restroom! But it helped demonstrate to me that I have the endurance and ability to handle pressure in any situation!
What do you miss most about Sweden when you are away?
Of course I miss my family and my boyfriend, but we are used to being away from each other now and I am willing to make sacrifices to reach my goals for the future, so I can do the work I love and help others. I also miss some of the food and of course my friends!
Any words of wisdom for young women seeking a similar path?
This may sound cliché, but never let anyone else define you, be comfortable in your own skin and don’t be afraid to "be yourself"-no one else can tell you who you are!
Certainly many girls see you as a role model, how do you approach this responsibility and who are some of your role models?
I always think about the long term of my actions and I always ask myself "is this the type of behavior I would want my parents to know about?" Knowing that I can say yes to this makes me confident that I am able to be an inspiration to young girls. Ellen Degeneres is a big role model of mine! She is very comfortable in her own skin and I just find her absolutely lovable! She knows her strengths and because of that she sparkles; to me she is the definition of a beautiful woman.
What is your definition of beauty?
Beauty is intrinsic and outward, to me, beauty is being able to look at yourself anytime of day, sick, healthy, sad, angry, or happy and say "I am beautiful" and see it from inside and out. Of course always being comfortable in your own skin goes without saying!
What is your must-have beauty product?
FACE Stockholm Mascara! It is THE BEST!!!! I love this product!
Can you give us a behind the scenes glimpse of what it's like as the women prepare for the stage before and during a pageant contest? Are there any particular rituals or habits you follow in preparation?
For me backstage can feel chaotic, not everyone is going to feel the same way, I am competing against 88 other girls, but for me, I always meditate and try to remain calm. I do not let anyone else's energy effect me, I maintain focus and don’t worry about anyone else, I try to remain consistent in this practice.
What are you most nervous about?
Of course I am nervous I might trip on stage, but that's why practice makes perfect!
What are your plans after Miss Universe? How will winning or losing determine what you pursue next?
Well I would love to come back to Sweden and begin a television career. For instance I would love to have a show like "Ellen," where I can be an inspiration for others and help other girls achieve their dreams. If you're looking for the perfect collection of essential beauty products, look no further! The World Traveler is a compact group of cosmetic products that work for every skin color from day to evening and everything in between. Here's our Makeup Artist's Guide to getting the most out of this essential kit.
MIST MATTE SHADOW The perfect base for your lids, also works as a highlighter and primer, covering darkness, veins and discoloration. Apply generously to entire lid using Brush #11s. Finish with Volumizing Mascara for a clean, simple eye look.
RUSSIAN CAVIAR MATTE SHADOW Can be used for greater definition or to create a smoky effect for evening.
To line eyes, apply along the very base of the lash line with the #13 Brush.
For a smoky effect, apply shadow with #11s Brush to the entire lid and into the crease. Continue to layer for greater intensity, using Mist Eye Shadow to blend.
KÖRSBAR BLUSH Use for cheeks and eyes. Sweep onto the apples of the cheeks with Brush #33 for a healthy glow. Or add to the brow bone for a pop of color.
MYRRAH BROW SHADOW For brows and/or as a shadow or liner. Using Brush #13 apply lightly onto brows with upward strokes following the direction of growth. Emphasize the arch or highest point of the brow concentrating on where the highest point of your brow is to 'lift' the entire eye area.
SCENE LIP PENCIL Use this pencil to make your lipstick last, define and correct proportions and create a fuller appearance. With a slightly 'dull' point, sketch in lips with a light hand, creating a soft border, rather than a sharp outline. Fill in entire lip for added staying power.
NAKED LIPSTICK For a smooth coat apply with Brush #22. Press a tissue to lips for more of a 'stain look' or apply several coats for beautiful shine. In a pinch, Naked Lipstick can also be applied to cheeks as a cream blush/bronzer. Tap on gently with fingertips for fresh color and shine.
Every World Traveler kit comes with a 4–Well Pallette in an Ida Black Prickig Bag.
This is really no laughing matter! Our Cracked Up special effects Nail Polish is a serious nail statement.
We have to admit, it was hard to resist the urge to have a little fun and try it over and over again just to see how the crackle or shatter formed each time.
Whatever the referece: exotic or prehistoric, scales or bark, the cracked ice of a wintry landscape or the cracked earth of a scorching desert, shattered glass or the "Shattered" lyrics, it seems each time we try Cracked Up, a completely unique set of nails is revealed.
All it takes is one top coat over your favorite dry nail color, a little patience while it dries and you too can marvel at what hatches!
No matter how often it happens, it’s hard not to marvel each time we discover just how small the world is.
Whether we travel half way around the globe only meet our next-door neighbor's brother and fall in love or find a long lost-friend sitting just two cars behind us on the train as we search the floor for a lost glove, it’s always intriguing and inspiring to find connection and familiarity, to ponder the concept of destiny, and flirt with the idea that some things are just meant to be.
So perhaps it’s not by chance that Jason Rodgers, the photographer who shot our look for Fall 2012, also shot the Spring 2013 Lookbook for the street-inspired womenswear label MadeMe. Or that MadeMe's creator and designer, Erin Magee, chose none other than the multi-talented, DJ, stylist and makeup artist, Valissa Yoe to do makeup for the shoot.
Because, as it turns out, not only do these two girls have interesting stories to tell, but in their personal journeys, and creative discoveries, they both explore and embody the same fundamental concepts that guide the FACE Stockholm brand: working with confidence, creativity, independence, entrepreneurialism, enthusiasm, diversity, vibrancy, color, and texture.
So even before we discovered that Valissa’s kit was chock full of her favorite FACE Stockholm products to achieve the look for MadeMe’s girl-power concept, we knew we had to get to know them better!
FACE Stockholm: How did you get started in fashion, what lead to the development of the MadeMe brand?
Erin Magee: It was a total accident! Growing up in Canada, all I knew is that I had to make my way to NYC. By 18, I figured out a way down here. By 23 I was working for Umbro x Kim Jones, by 25 I was working for Supreme and somewhere sprinkled in there I took some classes at FIT. I guess the rest is history!
What are your inspirations, both generally and for this particular shoot?
I went back 20 years, to a movement I was a little too young to appreciate at the time, but was always really into. I was fascinated by Riot Grrrl, grunge and all the girl power that surrounded those movements: girls in bands, albums like Pretty on the Inside, Live Through This, the movie Tank Girl, and everything that came out of Olympia, Washington. Empowering women through music, literature and art. It was a really cool time for young girls. It was a time where girls did what the boys did and they did it better.
What’s you’re favorite piece from the spring 2013 collection and why, what does it represent to you?
I have 2 favorite pieces from SS13 collection, the "F*ck" Lace Empire Dress: it's very "kinderwhore" and is a cool piece that incorporates lace and language to get the feeling across. It's not going to be the best seller in the collection, but it really speaks to the inspiration. It fits well, and it's fun to wear.
My other favorite would be the MA1 Cat Bomber. Cats were definitely heavy 90's imagery. A digitally printed cat on a classic MA1 Military Bomber? Genius!
What projects or collaborations have been particularly interesting and fun to develop?
I've done MadeMe capsule collections with other brands like, Vans, Stussy and Schott. And as you’ll see in the Nylon feature I’ll be working with Dickies for Fall 2013.
How do you know Valissa Yoe and why did you choose her for this shoot?
Valissa used to post these huge stickers of her face and contact info all over downtown. One time, I stuck one eeeeny-teeeny-meeeany MadeMe sticker on a mailbox in Williamsburg and I got arrested! So, I was always really intrigued by this girl who used to stick massive stickers of her face on every surface downtown. We also had a lot of mutual friends.
So, a couple years ago I hired her as a stylist to work on a MadeMe/Stussy shoot with Charlotte Free. We had a great time together and I really liked the final outcome of the shoot.
Valissa always mentioned she was also a makeup artist, although I hadn't seen any of her work. When it came time to produce this current shoot, I took a leap of faith and hired Valissa for makeup based on how much I liked the previous styling work she did for me. Looks like I made a good judgment call on that one! (pats back)
FACE Stockholm: How did you get started, what lead you to makeup?
Valissa Yoe: My interest in makeup began as a little girl, working with face paints at the local fair and Halloween parties. In high school I did a lot of oil painting, inspired by surrealists like Dali and Magritte. Then working as a fashion stylist I was always watching, questioning and taking notes from all the top makeup artists on set.
What is the connection for you between music and makeup?
I submerged myself in the music scene when I moved from the suburbs to NYC in 2005 and makeup has always played a role in that. It helps put a vision to a musican's sound. Siouxsie and the Banshees, Grace Jones, Madonna, and Boy George have mastered developing iconic images that influence pop culture from generation to generation. I recently djed for the annual Bowie Ball at Le Poisson Rouge with full on David Bowie face. The drag queens were in full tribute mode to him as well.
Who are some of the most fun and interesting people you’ve had the opportunity to work with?
The most fun and interesting people I’ve done makeup/grooming for would have to be Chevy Chase for all the antics and nostalgia (I’m an 80s baby!) and Maluca Mala for her pure beauty and fusion of fashion and music.
What was the inspiration behind the makeup for the MadeMe shoot?
The makeup inspiration for the MadeMe lookbook shoot was full 90’s grunge. Think Hole and Riott Grrrl. I used smiley face contacts, dark lips, lots of liner and neon, glycerol and glittered tears.
Erin Magee, the founder of MadeMe, has a strong vision and brought together the perfect team to execute the job. Jason Rodgers was the photographer capturing the magic moments, Aut Sivongxay was heavy on the flawless platinum weave and the stylist, Radio Rose, brought her A-game, as usual.
How did you discover FACE Stockholm?
I discovered FACE Stockholm when I met John Jones, one of your key makeup artists. I was working on hosting a TV show in Sweden and he suggested I come by the Time Warner Center store to pick up a few products. Once I tried the lavish array of lipsticks and shadows, it became hard to use any other brand!
What are your favorite FS products? And which did you use on the shoot?
I love the FACE Stockholm for J.Crew Chili Flake Lipstick and Obscenity Lipstick. I used Alarming Matte Eye Shadow and Black Lipstick on set.
Do you have any favorite projects past or current?
My favorite project would have to be the special effects makeup I did for a Sony commercial. I made about a dozen hands emulate particular video games like Street Fighter, Tetris, etc. Lots of cubes and gore!
So what's next?
Well speaking of gore, I'm looking forward to Halloween! Like I said in the beginning I've been doing Halloween makeup since I was a kid, and this year I'm taking appointments at my studio in the East Village in NYC. Anyone who's interested, can just email me at valissa at valissayoe.com to set up an appointment.
Helen's 3–Day Intensive Makeup Bootcamp, October 2012
BY HELEN ANDERSSON
What a fun class we had! Lots of laughs and lots of learning!
We started by looking at the history of makeup in its many forms, from the first color Vogue cover to the ever changing looks of icons like Jane Fonda, Lauren Hutton, Madonna and Lady Gaga.
We then moved on to the makeup artist's basic makeup kit and color theory.
Step-by-step, we covered how to prep the skin, how to choose the perfect foundation for any skin color/type, contouring/highlighting, blush, application techniques for different eye shapes/colors, finishing with how to achieve the perfect lip.
The students then had the opportunity to do a face from start to finish, using all their newly-honed skills.
I was a very proud teacher at the end of the course — everybody did really great work!
Students in full makeup action!
Demonstrating the many steps to a achieve a “smoky eye”, holding the perfect Blender Brush # 39, a must-have in any makeup artist's kit!
Applying lipstick with a brush to get the most perfect result takes a lot of practice.

For the second year running, in cooperation with Hudson Arts Walk 2012, FACE Stockholm opened the doors of our Warren Street shop to young artists. We invited children of all ages to create self-portraits using only cosmetic pigments.
Lining the street along the shop’s facade, mirrors, brushes and a multitude of brilliantly colored textures tempted those perusing the art on Warren Street in Hudson to stop and try their hand at creating a masterpiece of their own.
Even as clouds threatened overhead, a steady stream of participants, seemingly unfazed by the possibility of a wet interlude, joined our artists and interns in this revealing act of self-discovery.
Inspired by their own mirror reflections, they worked intently throughout the day to capture the image they saw. And, in the process, their faces, inquisitive and enthusiastic both on the page and in the flesh, shed light on the overcast day – if we were inclined to sing a tune it just might have been “You are My Sunshine.”
The results of their efforts, beautiful and endearing, now grace the windows of the FACE Stockholm Warren Street shop — waiting to be heard, like a chorus singing with many voices as one.
Everyone needs a breather at the end of the day — including your skin!

Achieving the bold, defined lines seen in our Fall Look and on streets and runways around the world does take some skill and patience, but the payoff is definitely worth the effort.
Working with our Precision Eyeliner, Lead Makeup Artist and Educator Helen Andersson shares some tips and tricks (and some sweet sketches) to help get you started.
Helen says: "Using liquid eyeliner does take a bit of practice, here are some tips:
Steady your hand holding the liner bracing it on your cheek and hold your eyelid taut with the other hand.
For a thin line along the inner corner of the eye, apply light pressure, gradually applying more pressure for a thicker line as you work your way to the outer corner.
Now as you come to the end of your lash line turn the eyeliner pen around and swoop back (meeting the line you just drew) using the point to create the upward “wing.”

Since 1997 when she landed her first gig as a professional makeup artist, Tracy Ewell has been dedicated to art of makeup. Having studied fine art in college, Tracy ultimately discovered that the living canvas was where she would find the most satisfying outlet for the form of expression and challenge she craved.
Fascinated by the world of beauty and determined to offer her clients top notch services and product, she opened her own boutique in New Orleans in 2001.Looking to build on her experience and stay on top of the latest trends, it was a trip to NYC in 2000 that first lead Tracy to the Swedish brand. At the time, the line was sold exclusively through full concept shops, but after seeing the range of colors and playing with the pigments, Tracy knew she had to have them and approached the owners about the possibility of representing the brand. Her enthusiasm paid off and in 2001, a limited range of FACE Stockholm products were available through Tracy Ewell Cosmetics & Skincare.
But within only a short time, the shop's early success would literally be swept away in the damage and devastation brought by hurricane Katrina. Like many relocated to Atlanta and find a new home for the store.
Over the next few years, Tracy Ewell Cosmetics & Skincare would have various addresses, and even though her skills would catch the attention of Daily Candy and Allure Magazine, the encroaching economic recession would eventually force her to reluctantly close the shop's doors once again.
Having weathered the storm — both literally and figuratively — of Katrina and the recession, Tracy looked for the silver lining and set her sights on the Hollywood.
Now a member of the Local 798 Makeup Union out of New York, Tracy is working behind the scenes to create movie magic on productions like Tyler Perry’s For Better Or Worse, Madea's Witness Protection Program and The Marriage Counselor.
Since her beginnings 11 years ago in New Orleans, FACE Stockholm has always been along for the ride. These days, the girl who was once named Best Makeup Artist in Atlanta by Allure Magazine, is working on new titles, like 42 with Harrison Ford and The Internship with Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson and Will Farrell. And who’s on set with her? FACE Stockholm of course! Every Eye Dust, Glitter and Pressed Powder!

There are few cosmetic products that are entirely organic or natural because they have a limited shelf life, often require refridgeration, may perform poorly and can expire before they are used.
Q: Do FACE Stockholm products contain parabens? A: Parabens are currently used in some FACE Stockholm formulations. As questions about their safety in everyday use arise, we will closely follow the scientific research and work to eliminate any ingredients determined to be harmful and look for effective alternatives as they become available.
From Wikipedia on Parabens: "Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, moisturizers, etc. and they are even used as food additives. Their efficacy as preservatives, their long history of safe use—at least to the extent that scientific studies have not proven they are harmful—and the unproven efficacy of natural ingredients like grapefruit seed extract probably explains why parabens are so commonplace."

The Olympics weren't the only Opening Ceremony party in London this summer. Opening Ceremony, the much-adored retail store added London to the list of lucky cities hosting the OC mix of smart, stylish, urban fashion.
Founded in 2002, friends Humberto Leon and Carol Lim were inspired by the mission of the Olympics games, creatively merging their American design and business talents with countries from around the globe.
The Olympics in London this summer provided the perfect motivation to open a pop-shop in Covent Garden. And, as you'd expect, the opening night party was indeed a ceremony to remember. In addition to the unveiling of the bright and colorful store, there was a shopping event and a full-scale street fair with food trucks, DJs, perfomances and guests from around the world!
Also on the scene was our favorite nail artist Naomi Yasuda, creating her extraordinary nail magic using FACE Stockholm Nail Polish!
After our first brilliant collaboration at Pop Souk this spring, we were eager to work more with Naomi so when she told us about the Opening Ceremony event, we couldn't have been more excited!
Here's Naomi at work with some of her favorite FACE Stockholm shades.
FACE Stockholm Creme Blush in Allure.com's Top 10 Makeup Trends for Fall!
For sexy, rosy Apès-Ski cheeks, Allure.com says "Stick to cream blushes—they're easier to build up and diffuse, and they tend to have a translucent quality that allows you to see the natural texture of your skin underneath." FACE Stockholm Milan Crème Blush is one of their favorite options.
Hedström & Judd: Friends and neighbors with impeccable taste
It’s not by chance that Hedström & Judd, the shop next to the FACE Stockholm company store in our US hometown of Hudson NY, conveys a charmingly Swedish sensibility and is stocked with unique treasures and exquisite items for the home that suggest the influence of Scandinavian taste. The proprietors are long-time friends of FACE Stockholm’s owners Gun and Martina.
After visiting the Hudson Valley in the early 1980’s Barry Judd and Lars Hedström were convinced that one day they would leave Stockholm to live in the USA. Once a space was available in the FACE Stockholm building, they knew it was time to pack up and move half way around the world.
Attracted by the “buzz” of Hudson and the variety of stores, they settled in, utilizing years of interior and garden design experience to fill the spacious, light, airy shop with beautiful items, both new and old that offer a “fresh look at living.”
Now customers can escape the activity of the streets to find furniture, linens, ceramics, lighting, botanicals, gorgeous gifts, wall fountains, prints and more in this elegant shopping retreat.
Some favorites of the lifestyle store include:
Bird motif mugs from Emma Bridgewater in London;
Reproductions of 1930’s & 1940’s Swedish mushroom prints; sold unframed or framed and drop-shipped
Linen pillows adorned with colorful birds; made in the USA
Bedding by Pamela Kline at Traditions
Furniture by Swedish Blonde and Allin Wood
Blue and White China by Burleigh
Next time you're in Hudson, stop by the store or call for more information.

Behind The Scenes at the Shoot for our Summer Look
Watch Lead Makeup Artstist and Educator Helen Andersson creating our look for Swedish Midsummer with model Benedicte Henschien, photographer Jesper Haynes and hairstylist Diana Streany!
FACE Stockholm President Martina Arfwidson is featured in a story in WWD's Beauty Inc.!
In a feature about beauty industry executives called Private Lives, Martina, looking radiant and beautiful, talks about her life-long love of dance and theater.
"When you dance, you can't think of anything else. It is the quintessential meditation for me," she says. "You are in the moment, and not contemplating anything except for what you are doing at that very second."
From marriage to makeup and everything in between, we’re all about diversity and equality, which in part may explain why we have such an extensive range of colors — we just can’t bring ourselves to leave anyone out!
As parades and other festivities brighten the streets from Stockholm, to New York, to Los Angeles and everywhere in between, we can’t resist joining the celebration and recognizing the colorful statements of pride.
We seek to honor all expressions of beauty and so we wish to acknowledge to the LGBT community and support every choice to live free, choose love and add color to our beautiful world!
This summer, join a fun celebration in your city! You can also visit us online and in stores to choose from a rainbow of shades and create your own tribute to National Pride Month 2012.
And, whatever color you choose, be sure to wear it with pride!
The celebratory atmosphere and optimism and the glow that summer so faithfully offers, have inspired FACE Stockholm’s look for Summer 2012. Just as the flowers bloom in the warmth of the sun, our look is naturally radiant, as if kissed by the season itself; she is flushed with color and beaming with the enthusiasm of summer’s romance.
UPDATE: Watch this video of Helen Andersson and our team creating the summer look!
With the exception of Christmas, Midsummer is the most important holiday of the year in Sweden — and understandably so! When winter finally fades and summer explodes with life in June, the Swedes leave their work and the hustle and bustle of urban life behind to escape to the countryside. Here they take the opportunity to rejoice and celebrate the light and warmth that the summer solstice offers.
When the maypole is raised, bedecked in greens and flowers of every color, anyone who partakes will tell you there is magic in the air. As revelers dance in traditional garb and crowns of wildflowers, music, drink and the fresh tastes of the season, potatoes, herring and strawberries are enjoyed in plenty. And as we all know where there’s magic, there's love. Traditionally the young gather flowers to stow under their pillows at night in hopes of dreaming of their future spouse. It is truly a celebration of life in all it’s forms-past, present and future.
The nostalgia of this celebratory atmosphere, the optimism of ritual and the glow that summer so faithfully offers, have inspired FACE Stockholm’s look for Summer 2012. Just as the flowers bloom in the warmth of the sun, our look is naturally radiant, as if kissed by the season itself; she is flushed with color and beaming with the enthusiasm of summer’s romance.
Artist’s Application Notes
Best practices for recreating this look at home.
Start the summer by making sure to protect your skin from the sun! By applying a thin layer of the Tinted Mineral Moisturizer with SPF 20, you will also nourish your skin with minerals, herbs and vitamins, even out your skin tone and give it a healthy glow!
Apply Stockholm Crème Blush to cheekbones, it will add a hint of pink with golden undertones — perfect in the summer light.
Add a dusting of Mineral Powder Foundation as a finishing touch, keep it in your bag for “on the go” touch ups!
The Daisy is a flower used in abundance in the Swedish midsummer celebrations and can be seen adorning heads and Maypoles. It is also the name of our new Nektar lipgloss Prästkrage. Apply generously to pout! For an extra bit of pink, start with Lipstick Fantasy.
Add our new Illuminator to shoulders and collarbone for the perfect summer glow!
Finally, add a dash of deep, summer green with our newest Nail Polish, #113.
Here’s to a summer of good fortune, good health, and love and joy in abundance!
When we chose Benedicte Henschien to model our Summer 2012 Look, we knew her glowing face and bright smile were perfect for our Swedish Midsummer theme, but what we soon discovered was that her radiance originated from a heart of gold. During the shoot, the conversation turned to her interests outside of modeling and Benedicte shared a story we knew we had to repeat.
Through her work as a therapeutic yoga teacher, Benedicte established a wonderful and inspiring friendship with Christy, whose sister Diddi Washington founded Mission Haiti Helping Kids.
After first traveling to Haiti as a missionary in 2008, Diddi was deeply saddened by the devastation of the 2010 earthquake; it was heartbreaking to see so many children, orphaned and homeless, without access to basic necessities and no opportunity for an education. Determined to make a difference, Diddi raised funds and began Mission Haiti Helping Kids. Now, with three facilities, she is able to provide housing for 31 children, meals for many more and the opportunity to attend school.
Benedicte admires Diddi’s success: “Mission Haiti Helping Kids really provides a solid foundation for these children to thrive in life; they are truly making a difference.”
In the meantime, back in the USA, Christy and her daughters Tori and Julia work on the organizations behalf raising money and speaking at schools to educate students about Haiti. Julia even donated her birthday money to help see her aunt’s project come to fruition. Moved by their selflessness and resolve, Benedicte joined Christy and her daughters on her first trip to Haiti in the summer of 2011.
“Needless to say, this whole family is such an inspiration to me, and being together with them in Haiti doing volunteer work was a true blessing. The children in Haiti stole my heart completely-they are wonderful and delightful! I spent my days creating activities and teaching them English. I even had the opportunity to introduce yoga to the children. I miss them dearly and look forward to being with them again this summer!”
After learning about Benedicte’s experience it came as no surprise that her modeling fee went directly to Mission Haiti Helping Kids.
We can say with certainty that Benedicte truly embodies the spirit of optimism we sought to capture in the seasons look and her summer will without question be committed to good fortune, good health, and love and joy in abundance!
For skin that shines with a luminous healthy, youthful glow start with Illuminator. The reflective quality refines the skin’s surface to diminish discoloration and even texture and tone.
Wear alone, or mix with our Liquid Foundation for a shimmery, summery base.

We're excited to be a part of this spring's not-to-be-missed event,Pop Souk! And it's just around the corner — May 12th from 12-6pm. Save the date!
Pop Souk is the brainchild of Ladyfag, a dynamic and captivating presence at the intersection of nightlife, art and fashion in New York City. Conceived of as...
"More than just a marketplace, it’s an event where you’ll find some of the most talented New Yorkers hanging out in their own personal pop-up shops and hocking treasures from their own closets, selling their own designs, or tempting you with delights from their own kitchens! Come hear your favorite New York DJ’s spin, hang out with cocktails in the lounge, have your make up and nails done, get tattooed, taste the delicacies you never knew these night creatures could make and, of course, shop for your new Spring wardrobe!!"
This spring's event will take over two floors of Greenhouse, a nightclub on Varick Street in Manhattan and is already packed with an exciting list of vendors.
We are especially excited about Pam Hogg, an iconic fashion desinger from London, who will be in New York for the first time since the 1980s, selling limited edition pieces from her archives, t-shirts, posters and more at Pop Souk! Have a look at some of Pam's work at her site: pamhogg.com.
Of course we wil be there, too, with mini-makeovers, Nail Polish, Lipgloss and other fun products.
And stay tuned for news of some exciting collaborations at the event!

Across the pond there’s a love story brewing and it has nothing to do with William and Kate!
When Victoria decided on a change of pace in 2009, she left her work in the retail fashion industry and began rebuilding her career on her own terms.
Following her passion for cosmetics, she coupled that with her retail knowledge to fill a void in the online shopping options available to professional makeup artists and students. After a year of intense work and thorough research, Victoria Loves Beauty was born; a one-stop online shopping experience offering the highest in quality cosmetics and tools recommended by experts in the industry.
When it came to choosing a makeup line, Victoria says that part was easy:
“I first came about FACE Stockholm 10 years ago. My supervisor was Swedish and always did her makeup at work. One day I caught a glimpse of this sparkly, silver packaging and was intrigued immediately. It looked glamorous and most importantly, good quality. After she told me the brand story, I decided to try it and have been a huge FACE Stockholm fan ever since!
When I was developing the VLB concept, I knew instantly that I wanted to stock one brand and one brand only; FACE Stockholm. So I popped the question and here we are today!”
It was a proposal we couldn’t refuse! Needless to say: Victoria Loves Beauty and we love Victoria!
But don’t just take our word for it, see how press and customers are swooning as well:

The spirit of our spring look is bright, playful and optimistic, like the refreshed outlook of the season itself.
Liberated from winter, spring is resourceful and innovative, free to experiment with both color and form, paying tribute to the shape, proportion and sculptural qualities that we find in the work of the modern artist.
At the heart of the look is Glädje, our newest lipstick shade, remaining true to it's name (Joy, in Swedish) and adding a bright, playful dash of color.

FOUNDATION
Let your skin breathe and go easy on the foundation to achieve a "barely-touched" look.
Start with Spot-On Concealer, lightly tapping it into the skin with fingertips, only where needed.
Follow with an appropriate shade of Mineral Powder Foundation to even tone and protect skin from the suns harmful rays. Sweep on with Brush #4.
…What started out as a quick touch-up, ended up becoming a full-scale makeover!
While we liked the way the old site represented the brand for the most part, we knew from our customers that they often struggled with some of its limitations, especially in selecting products and colors. We had a wish list of our own as well, including more space to share all of the great knowledge, techniques and stories we’ve been collecting over the years, faster and easier checkout and better management of customer accounts.
We knew our foremost challenge is that choosing the right makeup online is difficult to begin with and that we needed to find the best way to represent the full range of products we offer — all the glorious colors and textures — to make selecting products easy and fun.
But how?
We started out with an image that Martina had been saving — a close-up shot of a gorgeously lit swatch of nail polish.
As we started playing with different products — powders, gels, creams — we quickly realized that each has unique properties and that we would need to photograph a swatch of each one individually in order to accurately represent color and texture.
Needless to say, photographing all 1000+ products and colors was a large task in itself! Add to that the fact that the swatches needed to look good both in a grid of many as well as on their own.
While some of the swatches we created looked amazing alone, they often took on the appearance of flustered hens when we placed them in a grid!
We also wanted to make sure that browsing and finding products would be straightforward and informative, so that it would be quick and easy for customers to find what they're looking for and maybe discover a few new things along the way. We worked at length with our team of makeup artists and designers to determine how our customers shop, what they are looking for and how we could translate that into an online experience.
We hope you'll agree that the result of our labor has made it easier to find specific products and related products by grouping them together in several different, and hopefully intuitive, categories.
Finally, we are excited about our new and improved sections for Fresh FACE, About FACE and, especially, Education. We hope you'll spend some time exploring these pages and learning more about us and all the interesting things we are planning for 2012 and beyond!
While we are excited (and relieved!) that this day has finally come, we realize that this launch is also just a beginning: our plans to expand and improve the online experience at facestockholm.com will continue. Be sure to look for new products, stories, tips, inspiration, videos and more in the coming weeks and months!
Of course, we also love to hear from you and welcome your emails and phone calls with comments and questions about the new site (or anything else!). Send your correspondence to info@facestockholm.com or call us weekdays between 10 am and 6 pm US Eastern Time at 1-888-334-FACE.
We are excited to announce the official reopening of our New York City shop at The Shops at Columbus Circle Time Warner Center!
For the past several months, we have been working furiously with architects and designers to create a brand-new, sleek, all-glass bubble on the first floor near the elevators at the 60th Street entrance.
We're excited to see all of our friends again, so stop in any time and say hello!
An Interview with Gun in the Swedish magazine Visage
How would you summarize Face Stockholm’s beauty philosophy?
In short, it is about quality, and education; we want to work with customers of all ages. It is important that we maintain a fun and playful environment – customers should feel welcome in our stores to try products without the obligation to buy.
What inspires you?
It may be the color of the leaves in Central Park, Indian monks ... I find inspiration wherever I am and I see beauty in the smallest things.
An Interview with Gun in the Swedish magazine Visage
Some highlights from the interview:
Name: Gun Nowak
Age: 69
Lives: In Stockholm and New York
Family: Husband, daughter Martina, her husband and their two children
Company stats: Face Stockholm owned stores yield approximately 50 million in Sweden. Today the products are available in 20 countries through almost 100 outlets, including 17 in the U.S.A, plus a partnership with J.Crew.
Best beauty tip: A positive attitude
Started the company: 1981
How did you start FACE Stockholm?
I had a jeans store on Gamla Brogatan in Stockholm, which went very well. But I wanted to do something more, so I went to the United States. At a trade show I met a chemist who gave me beauty samples, which I gave to my daughter because I thought I had no use for them.
One of my girlfriends who had a store in Stockholm, thought that I could sell some makeup in her shop. And so, Face Factory was born (later changed toFACE Stockholm)....It went well and I took back my store at Gamla Brogatan and customers began to flock in.
How important are trends in your work?
I travel a lot so clearly I am influenced by what I see. In addition, I worked for so long in fashion, so I have a gut feeling for what is what. We also listen to our wonderful makeup artists who have a good feeling for things as well.
How involved are you in the development of new products?
I do everything; I develop products and work with production with the help of an assistant. Recently, Martina and I were in a nail polish mood and we created 40 different shades in one night.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud when I see other people use our products.
But I'm most proud that I have the immense pleasure of working with Martina; that brings me the greatest joy.
I started the company with no money and have built it up by being prudent and frugal. I think you should take responsibility for your employees and we have full control over the company's total financial independence. I've never had any need to live flashy. I have a sweet house and a pretty garden. It's unglamorous. My life is just like I want it right now.

FACE Stockholm Celebrates 1 Year with Edward Carrier Salon
In December, our partners at the Edward Carrier Salon in Winnipeg Canada celebrated their first successful year with the brand's limited line, FACE Stockholm The Collection.
Salon owners and hosts, Deborah and Edward, have been in business since 1978, offering top-notch services and products to an ever-growing body of trusting, happy and loyal customers. If you ever have the pleasure of attending an Edward Carrier event, you’ll soon know why everyone there is smiling. The salon itself is in an inviting, beautiful converted house. Add to that irresistibly delicious, locally-made logo cupcakes, impeccably packaged, ready-to-go holiday gifts and makeovers with FACE Stockholm's Lead Educator and Makeup Artist Helen Andersson and you’ve got a winner!
Helen reports:
"I arrived to a fresh coat of snow and chilly 19-degree temperatures, but everything warmed up as soon as I met the people in Winnipeg! They all love FACE Stockholm and are so delighted to finally have us in their neck of the woods!
The anniversary event gave me the opportunity to meet and work with so many amazing women. For example, one women had recently cut her hair and was finally embracing her stunning natural gray color; but she needed a whole new makeup look. Yes, we could help!
Another preferred not to look "made up" but wore glasses and needed help making her eyes pop — yes, we could help with that, too! It’s always gratifying to find solutions to every woman’s makeup needs!
With the best hosts ever, Deborah and Edward always in action, tasty cupcakes to boost energy and a lovely, accommodating crew at the front desk we were all in good hands.
And, at the end of the day, when I finally put my brushes down, Deborah treated me to an amazing facial – her specialty, for which customers come from near and far. I felt wrapped in radiance for the holidays!"
For Arts Walk 2011 in our US hometown of Hudson, New York, FACE Stockholm opened our doors to young artists and invited children of all ages to create self-portraits using only cosmetic pigments.
For Arts Walk 2011 FACE Stockholm opened its doors to young artists and invited children of all ages to create self-portraits using only cosmetic pigments.
A table strewn with mirrors, brushes and a multitude of media in brilliant colors beckoned those perusing the art on Warren Street in Hudson, NY to stop and try their hands at creating a masterpiece of their own.
And who could resist?!
Inspired by their own reflections in the mirror and fueled by cookies and lemonade, 64 artists from ages 2 to 17 worked intently to create interpretations of their own faces.
The results are beautiful and endearing, but perhaps most telling are the quotes that accompany each portrait. From “this is me” to “I like my smile” and “this face likes pizza,” they demonstrate what we can learn when we take the time to see each other face to face.
Inspired by the independent spirit and magnetic presence of silent film legends such as Louise Brooks, our look for Fall 2011 reflects the uninhibited nature and intellectual daring of the borrowed-from-the-boys attitude and style.
Like the season itself, fall is provocative and bold, encouraging us to reevaluate, rediscover and reinvent!
Our premium skin treatment serum is free of perfumes, dyes, synthetic artificial chemicals, and other harsh additives and uses penzyme, derived from only all natural marine enzymes from the cold, pure ocean waters of Iceland...
Produced by Icelandic scientists, penzyme harnesses the natural healing power of marine enzymes to create a revolutionary gel with multiple health and beauty benefits. After more than 25 years of research, penzyme (meaning “penetrating enzyme”) was developed in Iceland and has been produced under stringent quality control for both pharmaceutical and cosmetic use. Free of perfumes, dyes, synthetic artificial chemicals, and other harsh additives; penzyme uses only all natural marine enzymes from the cold, pure ocean waters of Iceland. The self-preserving nature of marine enzymes allows for a preservative-free formulation that is simply water-based, clean, non-greasy, hypoallergenic, and entirely natural.
For thousands of years, cultures around the world have relied on the natural healing power of plants to cure a variety of ailments, but it wasn’t until the 19th Century, that scientists discovered that the splitting of protein enzymes was the cause of this success. Empowered with this knowledge, in the 1990’s, Icelandic scientists considered what healing capacities lay within the sea.
The study of marine enzymes began with the exploration of Iceland’s diverse and abundant marine life for their therapeutic and healing powers for wound and muscle care. However, after clinical evidence revealed their remarkable effectiveness, Dr. Jón Bjarnason, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Iceland, began examining their potential for cosmetic use.
It was soon discovered that unlike land-based enzymes, marine enzymes which are adapted to function at freezing temperatures deep in the ocean, become ’super-active’ and extremely powerful when exposed to room temperature. Thus, the active enzyme in penzyme, trypsin, is capable of promoting the regeneration of healthy cells at an incredible rate and is therefore an exceptionally effective and valuable aid in treating a variety of conditions, including, but not limited to:
Dry & chapped skin
After-sun care
Fine lines & wrinkles
Anti-aging
Eczema & psoriasis
Blemishes & acne
Scarring & stretch marks
Bites & stings
Arthritis & muscle pain
Minimizing pore size
The reason one product has the ability to treat such a multiplicity of complications is because enzymes are literally the essence of life. Thus, as natural production decreases with age it is essential that enzymes be replenished to enable the regeneration of skin cells. FACE Stockholm’s Icelandic Solution (IS) serves this purpose by naturally replacing and encouraging the regeneration process, making it ideal for diminishing the signs of aging.
The exfoliating, enzymatic activity in IS cleanses and protects the skin from potentially harmful microorganisms, while stimulating the body’s natural ability to heal. Surface impurities and dead cells are gently dissolved, promoting a glowing, blemish-free complexion, for even the most sensitive skin. It minimizes the appearance of pore size, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin discolorations. The antibacterial and soothing properties of the marine enzymes in penzyme also reduces redness, irritation, and blotchiness, leaving skin with a more youthful, radiant appearance. IS does not only address age-related conditions; it is truly a multifunctional product. It provides all day hydration, calms irritated and red skin, purifies blemished skin and reduces pore size. Due to the additive free formula IS gel is also optimal for sensitive skin and even provides healing relief for more acute conditions of acne, eczema and arthritis. IS is pure and contains only active ingredients. No dyes, parabens, fragrance or lipids are added. IS gel will dramatically reduce the need for other skincare products. Recommended for the face and body, penzyme based products are universal and unisex; appropriate for all ages and skin types and suitable for both men and women.
Enhance the soothing power of penzyme and extend the life of FACE Stockholm’s IS gel by keeping it refrigerated. Avoid excessive heat and direct sunlight.
Superstar makeup artist Tom Pecheux, who creates looks for celebrities and runway, cites FACE Stockholm's Eggplant Volumizing Mascara as his favorite and shares how he learned about the wonders of burgundy mascara from one certain superstar:
"Q: Have you ever picked up a makeup trick from a celeb you've worked with?
A: Yes! I think the best one was from Madonna. I don't know if she still uses it, but when I worked with her, she was completely into burgundy mascara, and she showed me how to use it to bring out her eye color. It's amazing on people with blue or green eyes."
The dulcet bliss of the first scoop of sorbet, the passionate exhilaration of a Baroque concerto...our look for Summer 2011 is subtle, sweet and deliciously different.
With two gorgeous new colors! Nypon Ros Nektar is a shimmery, soft peach and Sun Kissed Blush is the perfect touch of bronze for that summer glow.
